The religious credo on the new identity cards

17 April 2000

The HELLENIC FRONT, respecting all officially recognised religions and every Greek citizen's rights, is in favour of the inscription of the religious credo on the new identity cards. Orthodox Christianity has been for centuries linked with our fatherland and our national liberation. Everything that undermines Orthodox Christianity, undermines our nation, our traditions and, thus, our future.

The European Union has neither the right to intervene to the religious conscience of the Hellenic nation nor the right to dictate the way our nation may uphold its traditions and its religion. No-one can take the cross out of our flag.

The President of the HELLENIC FRONT, Mr. Makis Voridis, commenting on the issue said:

"The orchestrated attack of PASOK's government and the Left-wing, with the consent of New Democracy, against the inscription of the religious credo on the new identity cards, should alarm the Hellenic nation on the importance of the issue. The HELLENIC FRONT supports the Archbishop of Athens and Greece Christodoulos and demands a referendum on the issue in order to show the real motives of those who promote policies which are against the free will of the Greek people. For the past 25 years, the political establishment has not consulted the Greek people on any issue".
