The Copenhagen summit

17 December 2002

Hellenic Front greets the admission of the Republic of Cyprus in the European Union as a full member, an admission which includes the occupied northern part of the island. Time and again we had emphasized that we should follow the example of West Germany, for Cyprus to join the EU.

However Hellenic Front underlines that:

  1. Since the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU, none can question the EU "vested rights", especially the Greek and Greek-Cypriot side! Any solution to the Cyprus problem should be based on the UN resolutions and the freedom in movement, settlement and trade for all Cypriots.
  2. The Anan plan is in direct opposition both the UN charter principles and the EU law. So the negotiations with Turkey and the Turkish-Cypriots can not be based on it. The solution of the Cyprus issue will originate from the constitutional respect of all the democratic rules which safeguard the freedoms of all Cypriots, irrespective of ethnicity.
  3. The admission of Turkey in the EU is unacceptable and beyond any expediency. Turkey does not belong to Europe, neither geographically, nor culturally. EU should be based on cultural values and principles, such as the respect of the national identity, democracy and the human rights. The European nations have formed their historical evolution, to a smaller or greater degree, under the influence of the Greek-Roman civilizations and Christianism. We consider as humiliating the acceptance by the governing socialist party PASOK and the opposition liberal party New Democracy of the admission of Turkey in the EU, which would grind Greece with its population mass only.

Hellenic Front calls all Greeks to national alertness, because the positive development of the Cyprus admission to the EU can easily be overturned by the Turkish expansionism or by the machinations of the Anglosaxon element.
